Israel Heredia

Israel Heredia was born in Sacromonte, the historic gypsy section of Granada, Spain. He was raised in a family of gypsy Flamenco artists that are part of one of the most important Flamenco dynasties. They include his great-grandmother Rosa Amaya "La Faraona", founder of the first "Zambras Gitanas" of Sacromonte, his grandfather Luis Heredia Amaya, who was known as the "only gypsy sculptor in the world", his uncle, Manolete, who has been named "the greatest dancer of his era", the singers Chonchi Heredia and Marina Heredia who have won international acclaim and performed with such legendary artists as Paco de Lucia and at international festivals such as La Bienal de Flamenco de Sevilla.

At the age of 9, Israel Heredia recognized his vocation for the Flamenco guitar and began to study with his father, and then with his uncle, Antonio Heredia "El Chonico". He then studied with Emilio Maya and Diego del Morao. At the age of 14, he began his professional career at the "Pena Pepe Luis Habichuela" and at the Cave of La Faraona, where he learned to accompany singers and dancers. He then worked in numerous tablaos and festivals throughout Andalucia, where he shared the stage with such artists as the great Manolete, Curro Albayzin, Juan Andres Maya, Arcangel, Jose Menese, Rafael Amargo, Antonio Canales, Diego del Morao, Diego el Cigala and Antonio Jimenez.

Israel Heredia formed his own Flamenco group, Encuentro Cultural Gitano, in collaboration with the Heredia family, which toured Spain and other countries, winning many national and international awards. Beginning in 2009, he performed throughout Latin America, including in Colombia with the Orquestra Filarmonica de Bogota and at numerous theaters in Cali, Medellin, Cartagena and Manizales.

In 2012 he formed Israel Heredia Cuadro Flamenco, which has come to be known as the finest flamenco group in Colombia, touring the most prestigious theaters in all of the major cities of the country.

Currently residing in Miami, Israel Heredia works at several local tablaos and is a guitarist, composer and instructor at Ballet Flamenco La Rosa, working to increase the recognition and appreciation of Flamenco as one of the greatest styles of music worldwide.
